Located at Apex Island in Horsham, Victoria, the two pedestrian bridges provide eastern and western connections between the island and the surrounding Wimmera River network, improving access for walking, recreation, and community use.
CHALLENGES AND Solutions

View Full Case StudyThe project required durable pedestrian bridge components capable of performing directly above the Wimmera River while accommodating flood conditions and integrating with the bridges’ primary structural systems.
River and moisture exposure
DMGRATE™ FRP Mini Mesh decking and DMBEAM™ structural profiles provide corrosion resistance and reduced maintenance in the moisture-exposed river environment.
Flood conditions
The FRP components complement the wider flood-responsive bridge design, which incorporates lowerable balustrades to reduce obstruction during elevated river levels and downstream debris movement.
Structural integration
FRP C-channel joists were coordinated with the primary bridge structure to create a lightweight secondary support system beneath the pedestrian decking.
River corridor installation
Prefabrication allowed substantial portions of both bridges to be assembled before being crane-lifted into position, reducing construction activity directly within the river corridor.
Accessible pedestrian movement
Graded approach transitions and the FRP walking surfaces provide practical, durable connections between Apex Island and the surrounding pathway network.
