DM Composites delivered the Design & Construct replacement of an ageing timber pedestrian bridge at Troups Creek, providing a new 24-metre single-span FRP crossing engineered for long-term performance within a wet and environmentally sensitive creek environment.
Located at Menindee Terrace in Narre Warren South, Victoria, the bridge provides an important pedestrian connection through the local reserve and Troups Creek corridor. The replacement crossing maintains this connection while reducing physical intervention within the waterway through a single-span design with no intermediate creek supports.
CHALLENGES AND Solutions

View Full Case StudyThe project combined several significant constraints, including high-voltage transmission lines directly above the site, an environmentally sensitive waterway, restricted lifting heights, hydraulic requirements and limited access for conventional crane operations. The bridge design, fabrication and installation methodology therefore had to be developed as one coordinated solution.
High-voltage transmission lines
A specialist low-height push-and-slide methodology was developed using a Franna crane and low-boom handling equipment, allowing the bridge to be progressively moved into position while maintaining the required electrical clearances.
Constrained bridge installation
The 24-metre bridge was fabricated as four preassembled modules, reducing transport dimensions and simplifying handling beneath the overhead transmission infrastructure before final assembly on site.
Sensitive creek environment
A single-span configuration eliminated intermediate supports within Troups Creek, reducing permanent intervention within the waterway and maintaining a clear hydraulic opening beneath the bridge.
Environmental protection
Erosion and sediment controls, controlled plant movements and carefully sequenced earthworks were implemented to protect the creek banks, water quality and sensitive aquatic habitat throughout construction.
Wet and corrosive conditions
The FRP superstructure provides corrosion and rot resistance with reduced maintenance requirements, making it well suited to the persistent moisture and changing creek conditions at the site.
