Located along Holdfast Promenade at Glenelg, one of Adelaide’s most popular beachfronts, the access platforms form part of a wider network connecting the community to the sand, surf, and foreshore amenities. The project supports the City of Holdfast Bay’s commitment to maintaining safe, accessible, and low-maintenance coastal infrastructure in a high-use public environment.
CHALLENGES AND Solutions
The project required a long-term replacement for deteriorated timber beach access structures, capable of performing in a harsh coastal environment while allowing non-invasive installation within sandy soils.
Prefabricated FRP construction
Enabled efficient installation while mirroring the existing access footprints and reducing disruption within a high-use beachfront area.
Corrosion-free materials
FRP superstructure eliminated timber and steel from load-bearing elements, resisting salt spray, UV exposure, and coastal weathering.
Screw pile foundations
Provided a non-invasive foundation solution suited to sandy coastal subgrades, minimising disturbance to dunes and surrounding infrastructure.
Improved public safety
Anti-slip FRP decking and stair treads delivered reliable traction in wet and sandy conditions, supporting safe year-round public access.
Low maintenance performance
The all-FRP system removed the need for ongoing repainting, sealing, or replacement cycles associated with traditional timber structures.
