DM Composites delivered the design and supply of a modular FRP stair and platform system at Somersby Falls, improving public safety and long-term durability across a steep and environmentally sensitive waterfall trail.

LOCATION

Located within Somersby Falls in New South Wales, the project sits along a steep walking trail within Brisbane Water National Park, where works had to respond to exposed rock, changing terrain, retained infrastructure, and strict environmental and cultural heritage requirements.

The project required a lightweight and adaptable access system that could be installed across steep, irregular terrain without disturbing exposed rock or bedrock, while working within a remote and environmentally sensitive national park setting.

Sensitive natural environment

 Custom FRP interfaces were developed to align with existing rock formations while keeping works within the established track footprint and minimising excavation.

Complex terrain and geometry

 Fully customised FRP layouts, cut-to-fit panels, and non-standard framing were used to accommodate irregular rock shelves, steep gradients, and retained stair elements.

Limited site access

 Lightweight modular FRP components were sized for manual handling and heli-lift operations, reducing the need for heavy equipment in remote areas.

Wet waterfall conditions

 Slip-resistant FRP stair treads and decking, combined with stainless steel fixings, provided durable performance in a consistently high-moisture environment.

Hybrid structural integration

 FRP components were coordinated with hardwood framing and steel balustrade systems to suit the varying requirements across the five project sections.
