Gloucester Tree lookout platform

DM Composites delivered the design and supply of a bespoke FRP lookout platform for the Gloucester Tree, providing a lightweight and durable canopy access solution designed to reduce structural stress on the living tree while restoring safe public access.

LOCATION

Located in Pemberton, Western Australia, the Gloucester Tree is a 300+ year-old karri tree and one of the state’s most recognisable tourism landmarks. The new lookout platform sits approximately 37 metres above ground, preserving the site’s unique climbing experience while supporting the long-term protection of the living tree.

The project required a highly specialised lookout platform that could safely integrate with a living tree, accommodate its irregular geometry and future growth, and be efficiently installed within a sensitive forest environment.

Living tree integration

The platform was designed around the tree’s actual 3D profile, using custom connections and controlled offsets to accommodate future growth without placing unnecessary stress on the trunk.

Complex circular geometry
A segmented circular platform approximately 4.4 metres in diameter was developed with radial framing to distribute loads evenly around the tree.

Remote site installation
The platform was divided into four prefabricated modular sections, simplifying transport and reducing installation requirements within the forest environment.

Hybrid material system

Anti-slip FRP decking was combined with Duplex 2205 stainless steel structural framing to provide long-term durability and minimal maintenance.

Precision fabrication

Tight fabrication tolerances and coordinated connection detailing ensured the prefabricated components aligned accurately during installation while minimising on-site adjustments.
