Camilleri St District Park FRP Boardwalk

DM Composites delivered the design, engineering certification, and material supply for an elevated FRP boardwalk at Camilleri Street District Park, providing a durable, low-maintenance pedestrian crossing across a flood-prone drainage corridor.

LOCATION

Located at Camilleri Street District Park in Dolphin Heads, Queensland, the boardwalk forms part of Mackay Regional Council’s Northern Beaches park upgrade program, improving pedestrian connectivity between residential areas, open green spaces, playgrounds, and sports facilities.

OUTCOME

Installation of an elevated FRP boardwalk improving safe park access across drainage infrastructure.

CHALLENGES AND Solutions

The project required a durable pedestrian crossing capable of spanning a drainage corridor while avoiding impact to underground services and accommodating seasonal flooding.

Flood-prone terrain: An elevated FRP boardwalk was adopted to provide reliable pedestrian access across the drainage corridor during seasonal rainfall events.

Underground service constraints: Offset reinforced concrete pad footings and cantilevered FRP beam detailing were introduced to ensure no structural loads were transferred to the existing sewer main.

Coastal environmental exposure: Corrosion-resistant FRP structural members and SS316 stainless steel fixings were selected to withstand humidity, UV exposure, and coastal conditions.

Efficient installation: Prefabricated FRP structural components allowed rapid on-site assembly with minimal cutting, reducing construction time and disturbance to the surrounding parkland.

Long-term durability: Integrated-pigmentation pultruded FRP profiles eliminate coating failure and provide a low-maintenance pedestrian structure designed for a 100-year service life.
